ELENA HIGHT, JAMIE ANDERSON AND DANNY KASS WIN BIG AT THE THIRD ANNUAL ABOMINABLE SNOW JAM
Burton's third annual Abominable Snow Jam snowboarding competition wrapped up with 16-year-old Elena Hight claiming the event's top prize, the Volvo Overall Rider Award. Elena drove home a new 2007 Volvo C70 Convertible for having the best overall performance at the event, including a first place finish and best trick award in the halfpipe contest and second place finish and highest air award in the quarterpipe contest. Jamie Anderson and Danny Kass scored the sought-after Harley-Davidson Most Inspired Rider Award for their sick style throughout the event. Danny and Jamie rode away from Hood on a 2006 Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster® motorcycle. The podium winners of all events were also stoked to take home new Motorola PEBL mobile phones.
The 2006 Abominable Snow Jam kicked off with Nicolas Mueller and Molly Aguirre winning the quarterpipe contest held at High Cascade Snowboard Camp on Mt. Hood in the hot summer sun. Some of the world's top riders charged the 35-foot transition, including Danny Davis, Molly Aguirre, Nicolas Mueller, Anne-Flore Marxer, Peter Line, Hana Beaman, Chad Otterstrom, Elena Hight and Pat Moore. Nicolas Mueller pulled off a Chicken Wing McTwist, which scored him the best trick award and a swank Rolex watch. Alexis Waite's super smooth McTwist earned her a Rolex and the best trick title. Pat Moore went Richter and got the highest air of the day going 25-feet out, which scored him the 2007 Ski-Doo Freestyle Backcountry snowmobile. And Elena Hight took home the highest air and the Ski-Doo for the ladies by going 12-feet out of the quarterpipe.
On Sunday, top halfpipe riders competed in Mt. Hood's first 22-foot halfpipe with Elena Hight winning the women's contest and Japanese rider Takaharu Nakai taking the top spot for the men. Elena took control from the start with a big method, back-to-back 5s and frontside 7s. She later added to her leading score when she threw down a flawless frontside 9, which scored her the MacBook Pro for the best trick award. The men's finals were all about the Japanese riders throwing down kamikaze-style enormous McTwists. Takaharu Nakai started all his runs with McTwists in the 17 to 20 foot range and then continued down the pipe with a huge frontside 7, Cab 1080 and ended with a frontside 9 to take the top spot. Takaharu's gargantuan McTwists also scored him the best trick award and a MacBook Pro.
In the final competition of the event, Jamie Anderson and Jussi Oksanen stole the show in the slopestyle contest. Jussi wowed the crowd and the judges with his signature smooth style and impressive runs that included backside boardslide to fakie on the church rail, switch 180 to tail press 180 out on the rainbow box, switch backside 9, frontside 1080, frontside 7 in the jump line, Haakon flip on the pipe wall ending with a handplant on the quarterpipe. Jamie killed it for the ladies with a tailslide 180 out on the church box, Cab 270 on the rainbow rail, frontside 3, backside 180 to switch straight air on the jumps, McTwist in the halfpipe ending with a hand plant on the quarterpipe. Andreas Wiig won the best trick award and a Sony HDV Camcorder with a switch backside 9. And Silvia Mittermuller stomped the best trick for the ladies with a backside 720 nosegrab.
Special thanks go out to Burton, Motorola, Volvo, SoBe, Snickers, Paul Mitchell, Harley-Davidson,
